Xeedho Vs Shaashsaar

Postby zulaika » Tue Feb 20, 2007 10:01 am

ok in the spirit of celebrating occassions. let us toss few blah blahs at occassions we actually give a damn about instead of those gaalo dhaqan bs. so the other day, my friend who recently got married invited me to her shaashsaar. for those of u who don't know this, its a celebration that happens 7 days after the wedding, practiced mostly by reer koonfurs. I'm mostly familar with xeedho(this is for the northerners SomaliLanders etc.). the shaashsaar i went to was pretty cool, it was full of young people, contrary to most of the xeedho i've been to as it was moslty frequented by my auntie and dumar of her age. anyways. As a reer waqooyi girl, i must admit that i like shaashsaar better..in fact i'd prefer one personally but my hard core reer waqooyi mom and aunties would kill me. Laughing

oh and btw: if anyone can clue me in on the origins of shaashsaar, pleez do.

Shaashsaar is a old ritual practiced by the Hawiya who originally came from congo, this is unislamic behaviour and involves magic and naked ritual dances.

Zulaika--Your right.Nice Idea/topic.

Shaashsaar..? Can you explain a little bit more about the events that take place?.Lol...

Xeedho is full of elders. My neigbour recently had one delivered to her from her cousin, shes trying to pass some over to me, I hate 'muuqmaad'...?(Am I right?) Sad

Lol @ Maria! Finally you have woken up from the zzzzzzzzzzzz!
Gaaf is more interesting, been to a couple and always needed a translator.

Shaash saar has been highjacked and is totaly done differently nowadays than in the traditional way. Now one sees the new bride leaving her reception for a change of clothes and the shaash saar ceremony is done right there and then on the same night of the wedding reception, instead of having the event after 7 days (if s this a cost cutting measure, it is tacky!) Also, every Xaliimo wants to put a shaash on the bride, instead of a select group of house wives who have been happily married for a long time.
