ZULIEKHA,

before arabs the whole coast upto Mogadishu was swaxili. Hence why we got swaxili named areas in Mogadishu like Lido, Shangani, Jazeera etc.

What does Lido mean in swahili.
There's a famous cabaret in Paris called Lido , they ain't got nothing to do with the swahilis.
I'd say it is more italian than anything else.
No Angst , jazeera is sawahili but isn't swahili a mixture of arab and a local language?How can it be prior to the arabs then?

"The meaning of Mogadishu's name is uncertain. Some render it as a Somali version of the Arabic "maqad shah," or "imperial seat of the shah," thus hinting at a Persian role in the city's founding. Others consider it a Somali mispronunciation of the Swahili "mwyu wa" (last northern city), raising the possibility of its being the northernmost of the chain of Swahili city-states on the East African coast."

source: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... adishu.htm

----------------------------------------------------

of the two scenarios...i think the persian one makes more sense and is closer to the sounding of the name its self. what's up with the swahili version? I mean it stands to suggest that we were mispronouncing it all along....THANK GOD we did. can u imagin us callin' it "mwyu"...YUK..what an ugly sounding name that is. Laughing

Zuliekha,

Mogadishu along with Marka, Baraawe and Kismayu were once part of the Swaxili coastal city states well known to the ancients. It was called the Land of Zanj by medieval arabs and had other names before that. The city states spaned from Mogadishu (northern most) all the way to Tanzania and Zanzibar. If Mogadishu is arabic why is the oldest parts of the city have unmistakably swaxili names like Shangani and lido. And how come not a single area of Xamar or any coastal city of Somalia has identifiable arab name?

Zuliekha,

I've met some abgaals who told me Mogadishu is actually perversion of original somali name. Fasten your belts this is by far the ugliest name I've ever heard.

Mogadishu = moxogdishu Laughing
