(SomaliNet) Nigeria’s catholic church leader, John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan has asked Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to resign. He said that the president’s resignation was the only way the country would hold peaceful elections, come 2007.

He was attending a carols service organized by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and the Nigerian Television Authority at the National Ecumenical Center in Abuja.

He further cited rigging in the 2003 elections which saw People's Democratic Party come into power.

Obasanjo also attended the service. The Archbishop compelled Obasanjo not to follow the practice of most African leaders by remaining in power.
