LIBERIA: UN RENEWS BAN ON DIAMOND December 22, 2005

(SomaliNet) The United Nations Security Council renewed a ban on diamonds from Liberia saying due to the country's unrest. The council also formed a panel to conduct a follow-up assessment in the country to investigate and ascertain if the orders are being implemented.
The ban is to continue till there is peace in Liberia. President-elect Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, also has to meet the conditions for terminating the ban.
The Security Council wrote: "To consider, with the assistance of international partners and for a specific time period, the possibility of commissioning independent external advice on the management of Liberia's diamond resources, in order to increase revenue and investor confidence and to attract additional donor support"
