LIBERIA: FORMER SOLDIERS REFUSE TO VACATE BARRACKS January 5, 2006
Kizza Harajah
(SomaliNet) Liberian former soldiers have refused to leave a camp outside the city, to create space for new recruits. These soldiers, amounting to over 2000, are giving different reasons for their refusal.
70-year-old Master Sergeant Yapkawolo Gbellee, who has lived at the camp for over 10 years wants to leave the army with honour. He demands his 22 months' salary arrears and pension rights before he vacates the camp. "I joined the army with honour and the government cannot create a situation for me to leave the army with disgrace," he said.
However, it seems Liberian government is not willing to listen to these queries. 7th January has been set as the deadline for these soldiers to comply with this regulation before they are forcefully evacuated.
