SOMALIA: 12 PEOPLE DIE IN CLAN CONFLICT January 9, 2006

Apunyu Bonny

(SomaliNet) Gun battles between two rival sub-clans left at least 12 people dead in the latest flare-up in lawless Somalia and close to 31 others wounded in sporadic fighting, apparently motivated by revenge attacks that have engulfed the central Galgadud region in recent days.

Somalia's myriad clans and sub-clans have experienced several fights since warlords overthrew Mohamed Siad Barre 14 years ago and took over the Horn of Africa nation.

Somalia's Information Minister Mohamed Abdi Hayr said the feuding sub-clans have been arming themselves for the past days. The Residents and government officials as well said the two sub-clans had recently been stocking up weapons.
