Kizza Harajah

(SomaliNet) West Africa is most likely to suffer the most disastrous level of food shortage in Africa this year. As a result, the UN needs about $240 million to feed the West African population of which only $18.4 million has been received.

Last year, many countries in West Africa has low yields as a result of prolonged drought and locusts.

The worst affected was Niger in which over 3 million people would go without a meal for days.

"Despite a good harvest at the end of 2005, the Sahel region will face another difficult year. The poorest are likely to find themselves in a precarious situation again, their survival strategies exhausted and their purchasing power depleted." the WFP spokesperson revealed on Monday.
