AFRICA: AFRICAN UNION SAYS DISPLACED AFRICANS RETURNING HOME November 11, 2008
(SomaliNet)The African Union (AU) said Africans displaced due to the various conflicts occurred in the continent are returning to their villages as democracy-building process in Africa is progressing well over the past ten years.
Macyhe Mayanja, Humanitarian Affairs, Refugees and Displaced Persons Division Acting Head with AU, told WIC that the number of Africans returning to their villages has been increasing successively.
She said the beginning of democratic elections in African countries, activities carried out to bring about peace and stability in the continent and the conducive situations created at home contributed to the increase in the number of returnees.
Activities that enable to facilitate the repatriation of previously displaced people from Southern Sudan, Angola, Liberia and Sierra Leone in particular are also progressing well, she said.
According to Mayanja, there are close to 15 million displaced people in Africa and the majority of those are returning to their villages.
She finally said AU is preparing a law that enables to sustainably rehabilitate returnees in Africa.-WIC
