UN SENDS BIRD FLU EXPERTS TO NIGERIA February 13, 2006

Kizza Harajah

(SomaliNet) Nigeria has received experts from the Un to deal with the bird flu attack on the country's poultry. There is a threat of this disease attacking the whole of Nigeria if solution is not found fast.

So far, four farms in Northern Nigeria have been reported as having the infection. The affected Northern Nigeria states include Kano, Kaduna and the central state of Plateau.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have also responded to the attack by sending expertise. "Their area of expertise is veterinary medicine. They are going to combine with medical doctors to make sure that all measures to avoid contamination of humans are in place," said the FAO representative in Nigeria, Helder Muteia. However, the presence of poultry everywhere will make their efforts hard.
