LIBERIA: DISAGREEMENT OVER APPOINTMENT OF NIGERIAN COMMANDER February 14, 2006

(SomaliNet) Liberian president has carried out new recruitments in the Liberian National army. Among the appointed is Major-Gen Luka Yusuf, a Nigerian. However, former Liberian soldiers are not pleased with this move.
"I am totally against the appointment of a Nigerian commander. Are you telling me we do not have anyone here who is competent to do the work? ... This is an affront to us," commented former Liberian lieutenant Samuel Kolubah.
"It's a disgrace to our sovereignty," said former Liberian sergeant Daniel Wleh.
According toformer spokesman of the Liberian Defence Ministry, Philibert Brown,Yusuf's appointment is "illegal and unconstitutional".
Johnson-Sirleaf justifies her act by saying that in order to form a competent Liberian army, there is need for external support.
