SOUTH AFRICAN PRESIDENT, MBEKI IN UGANDA December 12, 2005

(SomaliNet) South African president Thabo Mbek has arrived in Uganda on a two-day state visit. many Ugandans especially the supporters of oppostion leader, jailed Kiiza Besigye think Mbeki's visit is crucial as the date for presidential elections draws nearer.

South African government had offered assylum for opposition leader Dr. Kiiza Besigye after the jailed leader had lost in 2001 election to President Museveni and fled Uganda citing intimidation by Ugandan government.

Alot of speculation surround the South African head's visit with majority of Ugndans speculating that he has come to intervean in the jailed opposition leader's case. Besigye returned home after four years of exi! le and was shortly arrested.

Besigye, who remains on remand in Luzira Prison in respect of charges of terrorism and illegal possession of firearms brought before the military General Court Martial, was also charged with treason and rape in the High Court.
