KENYA: NOW 3.5 MILLION PEOPLE NEED FOOD January 18, 2006

(SomaliNet) A total of 3.5 million people are in need of relief food representing an increase of one million people spread over 37 districts up from 26, said Special Programmes minister John Munyes yesterday-Daily Nation.

By Tuesday the Government had received a total of Sh5 billion but a large part of the Sh26 billion needed to avert the looming calamity was yet to arrive. The World Bank, the UK government, and the Kenya Red Cross Society pledged close to Sh1.7 billion but urged speedy distribution of available food.

Mr Munyes said relief efforts had however, been increased since more donations were coming in.

"The Government is feeding a total of 3.5 million people in 37 districts up from 2.5 million in 26 districts," he said when he received a Sh5 million donation from Bamburi Cement company in Nairobi.

In a bid to halt more animal deaths in dry areas a new programme to has been started by the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) to the tune of Sh150 million.
