KENYA: 38 PEOPLE KILLED IN CATTLE RAID January 20, 2006

(SomaliNet) A total of 38 people were killed and dozens wounded in northern Kenya following a cattle raid by tribesmen from neighbouring Sudan and Ethiopia. Kenyan police said Thursday.
"We got information that Toposa from southern Sudan and members of the Dongola tribe in southern Ethiopia clashed with the Turkana of Kenya after an incident of cattle rustling last weekend," a police official said.
The police official said the news only filtered through to the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Thursday due to the remoteness of Soyea, an ethnic Turkana village near the Sudanese border where cattle raids are a regular occurrence. This barren border area, in the throes of a severe drought, is experiencing growing conflict over dwindling water points as pastoralists travel further to find water for their weakened animals.
Kibaki’s government has declared the drought a national disaster and is struggling to cope with the starvation threat facing some 3.5 million people.
