KENYA: WB CAUTIONS PRESIDENT KIBAKI ON CORRUPT MINISTERS January 26, 2006
Apunyu Bonny
(SomaliNet) World Bank (WB) on Wednesday put President Kibaki on pressure asking him to firmly deal with Cabinet ministers implicated in the Anglo Leasing scandal. Reports The Standard.
Kenya’s Kibaki was urged by The World Bank to use the Code of Conduct for ministers to deal with the Anglo Leasing scandal.
Colin Bruce, World Bank's country director said the Government should use the Code to deal with those implicated in the multi-billion shilling scandal even as investigations get underway.
"The Anglo Leasing cases represent an excellent opportunity for the authorities to invoke the disciplinary provisions of the Code of Conduct signed by the new Cabinet weeks ago," Bruce said shortly after the bank approved a Sh1.7 billion grant to fight corruption.
"I believe that this is an historic moment for the Government to signal where it stands on the issue of political accountability," he said.
Bruce was speaking in Nairobi, where he announced that the Bank's board had approved a Sh1.8 billion credit in support of the Government's fight against corruption.
"I believe that this is an historic moment for the Government to signal where it stands on the issue of political accountability," he said. He spoke a few hours after World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz said in Washington that he was willing to withhold funding or halt the approval of loans for some World Bank-financed projects in Kenya should the Kibaki Government fail to act decisively on corruption
Kenya’s three Cabinet ministers also added their voice to World Bank’s claim, calling for the sacking of their corruption-tainted colleagues. Trade minister Mukhisa Kituyi, John Munyes (Special Programmes) and Njeru Ndwiga (Co-operatives Development) said any minister found to have been involved in corruption should be sacked.
