SUDAN: GUNMEN KILL SOUTH AFRICAN PEACEKEEPER IN DARFUR October 30, 2008

(SomaliNet) Unknown gunmen have attacked two South African troops guarding water well, killing one and wounding the other, a spokesman for Darfur peacekeepers had said.

Spokesman for the joint U.N.-African Union mission, Noureddine Mezni, said the peacekeepers were attacked Wednesday evening.

One died after reaching the nearest camp, about half a mile away. The other peacekeeper, a female soldier, was seriously wounded. She has been evacuated to el-Fasher, North Darfur's provincial capital.

Mezni says it's unknown who was behind the attack.

The mission known as UNAMID has lost at least 10 other peacekeepers since deploying earlier this year. A July ambush on a UNAMID patrol killed seven soldiers.-AP
