SUDAN: SUDANESE JOURNALISTS LAUNCH 24-HOUR HUNGER STRIKE November 5, 2008
(SomaliNet) In protest against Sudan's strict censorship measures, Sudanese journalists launched a 24-hour hunger strike and three independent newspapers began a three-day work stoppage.
According to one of the organisers, between 150 and 300 journalists are taking part in order to protest against government restrictions on editorial content.
Freedom of the press was guaranteed in the 2005 peace agreement that ended Sudan's long-running civil war, but journalists say the government is ignoring the agreement and they are censored almost every day.-RNW
