(SomaliNet) At least two people were killed Sunday when a light aircraft crashed and burst into flames moments after take-off in the Kenyan capital, police said.
The 5YDPS registered aircraft crashed at Nairobi's Wilson Airport at about 7:00 am (0400 GMT) after taking off for Mweiga airstrip in central Kenya, about 100 kilometres (63 miles) north of the capital, a police official told AFP.
"We have not yet established the exact cause of the crash, but preliminary investigations show that the aircraft crashed due to a mechanical problem," said Beatrice Nduta, deputy commandant of the Kenya Airport Police Unit. Nduta said the dead were Kenyan nationals of British origin.
Moments before the crash, the pilot contacted the control informing them he had developed a mechanical problem and was trying to turn back and land again. Nduta revealed.
"It crashed on top of a toilet in Mutumba slums," just outside the airport, she said.
