UGANDA: MR. MUSEVENI LEADING DR. BESIGYE IN PROVISIONAL ELECTION RESULTS February 25, 2006

(SomaliNet) Uganda Electoral Commission has released partial results of the Thursday’s presidential elections showing a lead by incumbent Mr. Museveni who has collected 688,301 votes, for 60.47 percent of the total.
Only 16 percent of the vote counted has been counted so far and President Yoweri Museveni is maintaining a wide lead over his challenger, Dr. Kiiza Besigye, election officials say.
Besigye had received 415,101 votes for 36.47 percent of the vote. He trails Museveni by 24 percentage points. The commission reported that independent Dr. Abed Bwanika had 11,626 votes, or 1.02 percent, Miria Obote had 6,475 votes, or 0.57 percent, and Sebaana Kizito had 16,702 votes, or 1.47 percent.
Mr. Museveni, who is seeking to extend his 20-year rule, is standing on the National Resistance Movement ticket while main challenger Besigye is for the Forum for Democratic Change.
