AFRICA: LEADERS FOCUS ON SUDAN, SOMALIA March 22, 2006

(SomaliNet) African leaders while attending a one-day summmit that conviened in Nairobi on Monday urged, the international community to provide funds pledged last year for reconstruction in war-torn southern Sudan.

The United Nations Security Council was also urged by the leaders to lift the UN arms embargo on Somalia inorder to allow for the deployment of a peacekeeping mission there.

The one-day summit brought together leaders of the seven-member regional group, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

IGAD,a 20 year-old organization was initially formed to further regional economic, agricultural, and environmental cooperation.

Mean while, Kenya’s President, Mwai Kibaki was handed the chairmanship of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) at the opening of the 11th Ordinary Summit of the IGAD Heads of State and Government in Nairobi.

Other leaders in attendance included President Omar Ishmael Guelleh of Djibout, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia, President Omar el Bashir of Sudan and President Abdullahi Yusuf of Somalia. The Minister for Agriculture Arefaine Berhe represented Eritrea.
