YEMEN AND ETHIOPIA IGNORE ARMS EMBARGO ON SOMALIA October 10, 2005
According to a recent UN report on Somalia, Yemen and Ethiopia are said to be arming the interim government while a non-disclosed country, most likely Eritrea is arming the opposition.
Heads of both countries have been long time friends of Somalia’s interim president, Mr. Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed who asked the UN Security Council to lift the arms embargo on Somalia on numerous occasions. He once said we cannot gain control of the country with light arms like AK47 assault weapons and pickup trucks.
If this report is accurate, whatever the deal is, Yemen and Ethiopia are clearly violating UN’s arms embargo resolution on Somalia and are flooding the country with fresh weapons.
