SOMALIA: HELP US OR FACE PIRATES AND TERRORISTS SAYS THE PM October 14, 2005
<|somalipm.jpg||left|>Somali Prime Minister Mr. Ali Gedi asked the international community to help his infant government with rebuilding Somalia’s navy army in an effort to curb widespread hijackings in Somalia waters. He said Somalia has been without a government for a long time and his new government is incapable of securing national waters.
The prime minister dined with few members of Somali parliament and other guests last night in Nairobi, Kenya where he spent last three days. He spoke about Somalia’s current situation and the need for international involvement for securing Somalia’s long coastline and waters. “All countries that use the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Eden must get involved and help us. It is an international problem and international community must take part in securing these waters.†He said.
Poor and chaotic Somalia has the longest coastline in Africa and the interim government cannot guarantee safe passage for international ships that crisscross the area. The prime minister acknowledged terror groups can use Somalia’s unprotected waters and shores.
