SOMALIA: NINE AU PEACEKEEPERS KILLED IN SUICIDE ATTACKS September 17, 2009
The Ugandan army confirmed that they lost nine soldiers as the deputy commander was seriously wounded in two loudly and powerful suicide attacks that targeted on the headquarters of African Union peacekeepers in Somalia on Thursday.
The commanding center of the Ugandan troops said General Nathan Mugisha, was among the injured in the twin suicide explosions that rocked the African Union base near the main Mogadishu airport this morning.
Shortly after the attacks, the Islamic radical militant group Al-Shabab, who vowed to revenge the US air raid that killed of their leaders this week, claimed the responsibility of the latest suicide bombings.
Witnesses told Somalinet that two vehicles with UN markings mounted with explosives entered entered the compound and blew up that sent thick black smoke in the air.
Officials of Al-Shabab said they hit the target especially where officers from US, Nato and UN were meeting inside former Halane military academy.
The African Union officials condemned the attacks as terror and barbaric act that wounded several senior peacekeeping officers.
On Monday, the US war planes attacked a village, 200 kilometers south of the capital targeting a vehicle and killing people inside, witnesses in the area said.
US government believed that Nabhan who was at large had been hiding in Somalia after the bombings on the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
