TORRENTIAL RAINS CAUSE DEATH AND DAMAGES IN SOMALILAND April 28, 2005

(Hargeisa) Hundreds of people lost their homes to flooding caused by heavy rains in the region. Floods swept away thousands of livestock and damaged homes, roads and airports.

The president of Somaliland (Somalia’s northern region) declared state of emergency yesterday and asked the international community for help.

Extensive damages and loss of life have been reported in most hit areas. Refugees who came back from refugee camps in Ethiopia lost hundreds of makeshift shelters and all major cities in the region suffered infrastructure damages. Killed livestock is in the thousands.

Mohamed Haji who lives in Hargeisa said the worst may not be over yet as the sky is still dark and full of water. Other affected cities include Burao, Berbera, Borame and Sayla.
