SOMALI PM IS JOINED BY SENIOR UN OFFICIAL IN MOGADISHU, SOMALIA May 1, 2005

(Mogadishu) Mr. Geddi who enjoyed unprecedented welcome in Mogadishu since his arrival on last Friday is busy visiting many national buildings including Radio Mogadishu, former president’s residence, and air and sea ports. He is accompanied by many foreign dignitaries and members of his government.

Another high-level delegation headed by the director in the Africa Division of the UN's Department of Political Affairs Mr. Haile Menkerios reached Mogadishu and joined the entourage today.

Many Mogadishu residents want to bring the government from neighboring Kenya to the capital. However, the prime minister and the president who is sill in Nairobi Kenya believe Mogadishu is too dangerous. They want to move the government to another city until Mogadishu’s security is improved and all armed militias taken out of the city. Mr. Geddi repeatedly said he does not want to fall into the same trap as his predecessor, Abdiqasim Salad who headed a similar government that was setup in Djoubuti in 2000. Mr. Salad’s government never materialized because of opposition from powerful Mogadishu warlords.

East African countries promised to send troops to Somalia to help the new government but no African soldier is on Somali soil today. Uganda may start sending about 800 soldiers this or next week.
