SOMALIA: MOGADISHU STADIUM ROCKED BY LARGE EXPLOSION May 3, 2005

Somali Prime Minister Mr. Ali Geddi was in a middle of long speech in the stadium which was packed by government officials, foreign and UN delegates, and thousands of Mogadishu residents when the whole building shook and deafening sound followed. Seven people were confirmed dead and about a dozen wounded.

The cause of the explosion is now leaning toward accidental anti-tank missile firing although people at the scene described it as an attempt on the prime minister’s life. He left the stadium right away unharmed.

Whether it was an accident or deliberate attack, innocent people who came there because of their deep hunger for justice, equality and true government lost their lives today.

Somalia has been without central government for over a decade now. The new government was setup in Nairobi, Kenya last year and it is now trying to relocate to Somalia. A lawless country filled with all types of weapons and people who have not been governed for a long time await Mr. Geddi and his government.
