SOMALIA: PUNTLAND FREE MEDIA CHALLENGED May 6, 2005
Puntland regional government of Somalia closed a local newspaper in Garoe whose editor was jailed last month briefly. This paper, shacab (the public) was the center of a legal matter last month when a judge threw the government’s claim and declared the paper has done nothing wrong. That same judge released the editor and another employee after they were arrested for violating state laws.
That short victory came to an abrupt end today after the government fought back with injunction of its own without court warrant. In a letter signed by regional vise-president the editor was told to stop the daily paper. In Puntland’s constitution, courts have more powers than the government and the matter will not likely end there.
