SOMALIA: ABDULAHI YUSSUF IN DJIBOUTI May 7, 2005
President Abdulahi Yussuf and other Somali delegates are spending this weekend in Djibouti participating in President of Djibouti’s inauguration. Mr. Ismail Omar Gelle won unchallenged re-election last month. He was the sole runner for the office.
Somali delegates include Puntland (north eastern region) president and high ranking federal government officials. Mr. Gelle was present when Somali president was inaugurated last October in nearby Kenya and his country hosted a historic Somali reconciliation conference in 2000. Mr. Abdiqasim Salad Hassan was elected as president in that conference but his government never materialized after many Mogadishu militia leaders opposed his administration.
Djibouti, a former Somali French colony is one of the smallest nations in the world and lies on the tip of East Africa.
