WFP DISTRIBUTES EXPIRED FOOD IN SOMALIA May 8, 2005
<|wfp_l.gif||left|>Today, twenty-five tons of expired rice imported and distributed by WFP (United Nations World Food Programme) was burned outside of Galkaio, Somalia. Local officials say the organization distributed expired food through local health organizations and hospitals, bypassing government inspections.
The food was burned in a public place to send a strong signal to those who import expired commodities. SBC local radio station reported the sacks carried USA flag.
Public health officials in Puntland often confiscate and destroy expired medicines and food from businesses. Today’s burning of WFP donated food was the first of its kind. Officials at the scene warned the public not to eat expired food even if it came from trustworthy organizations such as WFP.
