UN AND WORLD BANK OFFICIALS EXPECTED IN SOMALIA May 9, 2005
Local government of Jowhar, 90 km north of Mogadishu is preparing the city to receive representatives from the United Nations and the World Bank. The city is the front runner for hosting the new government until Mogadishu is secured.
These representatives who are expected today will examine the city’s infrastructure and what’s needed to make it suitable for the government.
Mid size Jowhar is controlled by a former military official and supporter of the new government, Mr. Mohamed Omar Habeb. It has been peaceful for a long time.
Baydabo city was another option but it changed hands last month when pro-government militias were chased out of the city. The current Baydabo administrator publicly accuses the new government of helping his foes who are trying to re-capture the city.
Current situation in Somalia: After two years of reconciliation conference in Nairobi Kenya, a federal parliament and government were setup last year. The government still operates out of Nairobi and is preparing to relocate to Somalia. East African nations pledged troops to help the new government establish and train national armed forces.
