FRESH FLOODS IN SOMALIA – BELEDWEYN NEEDS HELP May 12, 2005
<|floods.jpg||right|>Shabelle River burst its banks in Baladweyn city of Hiran province (central Somalia) last night. Hundreds of residents fled their homes and many others are still trapped and surrounded by water, unable to escape. City officials are not well equipped to combat natural disasters like floods and they are in dire need of emergency help. However residents are working hard to save their city from nature’s fury. About 1000 Km north of Beledweyn, central part of north eastern city of Qardo is under water after heavy rains and floods. Qardho is situated between two mountains with a valley going through the city which makes it potential flood path. The city is divided and the national highway between Bossaso and Garoe is closed temporarily. Puntland authorities are mobilizing relief efforts.
