SOMALIA: GUN BATTLE IN MOGADISHU May 17, 2005

Wardigley district in Mogadishu was a scene of chaos today after land dispute turned into street gun battle. Two opposing groups used heavy weaponry and some casualties have been reported.

The land dispute is between a religious cult leader and the children of the founder who children claim their father used his own land when he started the cult. The leader argues the real estate belongs to the cult, not their father who passed away and left the mansion for his followers. The stakes are higher now because loss of lives and property in today’s fight.

One stray RGP (rocket propelled grenade) or some sort of missile hit a nearby building owned by a telecommunications company which resulted phone service disruptions in the area.

Mogadishu is controlled by various armed militias who intervene in armed confrontations.
