SOMALIA: PARLIAMENT SPEAKER ESCAPES BOMB TRAP May 22, 2005
<|sharif_hassan.jpg|picture: courtesy of arlaainet.com|left|>The Speaker of Somali Parliament Mr. Sharif Hassan and his convoy were stopped on their way to a military base outside of Mogadishu after a bomb exploded on the road they were traveling on. The explosion happened a few minuets before they reached where it was planted.
According to Mogadishu based website midnimo.com, the bomb injured three pedestrians, a woman and two children. Two more un-exploded bombs were also found at the scene.
The prime minister escaped uninjured in a similar incident last month when a bomb exploded in Mogadishu sports arena. Nine people died in that incident.
A high ranking police officer was killed in Mogadishu yesterday and another former government official who is seventy years old was kidnapped from his home last week.
Although Somalia has been in chaos for over 15 years now, using booby-traps and bombs in public areas were never reported before this year. This new trend is frightening.
