SOMALIA: QUARTER MILLION DONATION FOR MOGADISHU DISARMAMENT EFFORTS May 24, 2005

Somali Parliament members met with representatives of Mogadishu businesses today and were given 220,000 dollars. Mogadishu businesses welcomed the government’s efforts to remove weapons and armed men from the capital.

Today’s donation was the first installment of a promise many Mogadishu business owners made to the speaker of the house earlier this month.

Mr. Mohamud A. Gabeyre who headed business owners’ reps said they were ready to take part in this long overdue process of moving militias out of the city.

Millions of dollars are spent on security each year by business owners in Somalia. Many businesses in Mogadishu have more armed guards than regular employees and they hope to be the first beneficiaries of this safety drive.
