ANOTHER JOURNALIST LOST HER LIFE IN SOMALIA June 5, 2005

Duniya Muhiyadin Nur who worked for HornAfrik TV station in Mogadishu lost her life near Afgoi city, about 30 kilometers from Mogadishu. Duniya was killed when the car she was traveling in came under automatic weapons fire. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was taken to Madina Hospital in Mogadishu.

Duniya was well known in Mogadishu for her journalism talent and the motive behind her assassination is not clear yet.

It is a sad day for all Somali journalists.

Another HornAfrik reporter, Mr. Abdalla Nuradin was shot three times in his family shop in Mogadishu less than two weeks ago on May 24. The shooter fled the seen after the assassination attempt and was never apprehended.

Journalists in lawless Mogadishu risk their lives every time they go to the field. In less dangerous areas of the county, journalists report intimidations and unlawful detentions when they criticize regional administrations.

Current situation in Somalia: After two years of reconciliation conference in Nairobi Kenya, a national parliament and government were setup last year. The government still operates out of Nairobi and is preparing to relocate to Somalia. East African nations pledged troops to help the government establish and train national armed forces.
