SOMALIA: GOVERNMENT HEADS HOME June 13, 2005

<|abdulahi_gelle.jpg|left:President Abdulahi and PM Ali|left|>After seven months of its establishment in Nairobi, Kenya and several postponed relocation deadlines, Somali government in exile finally heads home today.

The government’s agenda was to relocate to Baydhabo and Jowhar cities temporarily until Mogadishu is secured. However, the move will not include Baydhabo at this time.

The interim government was established in nearby Kenya last year after two years of three-phase national reconciliation conference in which thousands of Somalis and international delegations were involved. IGAD East African (Intergovernmental Authority on Development) spearheaded the conference from its inception to today’s official closing.

Somalia’s politics is very complicated and hard to understand. Since the collapse of the last central government in 1991, similar conferences were called about a dozen times and all failed.

The current interim government is not immune to failure too. Many Mogadishu warlords left Nairobi conference after Mr. Abdulahi Yusuf Ahmed was elected president and vowed to bring this fragile government to its knees before it gets any stronger. These men had a long standing feud with him in the past and believe he wants to disarm them into submission. Their mistrust grew after Mr. Ali Mohamed Geddi, a civilian who is not affiliated with any armed faction was selected as prime minister by the president.
