SOMALIA: PM TEAM SAYS LIBYA IS ON BOARD July 19, 2005
A Somali delegation led by the Prime Minister, Mr. Ali Mohamed Gedi seems to have succeeded with its sales pitch - getting Libya onboard. The team received very warm reception and promises to help Somalia's fledging government from Libya.
It was yesterday when the speaker of Somali government, Abdirahman Dinari who is traveling with the team announced the release of 50 Somali nationals, most of whom with immigration violations from Libyan prisons. This announcement came after the prime minister met with Libyan justice minister. Hundreds of thousands of Somalis who fled the civil war live in almost all African and Middle Eastern countries. These people often get harsh penalties for violating immigration laws.
Mr. Dinari told SomaliNet the prime minister and his team met with Al-sayid Maxamed Majdoub, a senior official in the Libyan ruling party today and discussed with him about the two countries' relationship and Somalia's road to recovery. Mr. Mahoub said the Libyan government is determined to help Somalia in any way possible. He also assured them that Libya will have a leading role in international efforts to donate 94 million dollars that the new Somali government needs urgently.
Somali President, Mr. Abdulahi Y. Ahmed visited Libya and met with President Muammar al-Qaddafi last month.
