SOMALIA: BRUTAL MOGADISHU HEADHUNTING CONTINUES July 31, 2005
<|mogadishu.jpg||left|>Two high profile men have been assassinated in Mogadishu in the past two days. Colonel Mohamed Osman "Onka" of former Somali Security Services (CID) was gunned down today on a busy Mogadishu after his car was ambushed with a hail of bullets. He was driving alone. In a similar incident, well-known religious teacher and Imam, Sheik Mohamed Mumin Harun was killed yesterday night when he was ambushed on his way home from a mosque. His driver and at least another person were wounded in the shooting.
In a similar double killing last month, a senior official of one of Mogadishu’s Islamic courts and the head of CRD Somalia, WSP International subsidiary were killed within twenty-four hours last month.
These mysterious killings have been going on in Mogadishu for the past two or so years and no one ever claims responsibility. The ugly truth is that life just goes on.
Last month, ICG (International Crisis Group) released a report on Somalia and these kinds of assassinations in the capital. ICG report claims this invisible battle in which many Somali intellectuals lost their lives is between religious groups and Al-Qaeda sympathizers on one side and international anti-terrorism agencies and Ethiopia on the other side.
Somali media outlets say they know who are behind some of these barbaric killings and their motives without pointing out any particular group.
It is SomaliNet policy not to carryout investigative reports that that may put its Somalia reporters or anyone else in danger. Our reporters are also prohibited from speculating unconfirmed motives or claims. It is very difficult to balance public need for truthful reports and the safety of unarmed journalists in Mogadishu.
