SOMALIA: JOWHAR SECURITY SITUATION September 11, 2005

Somali interim government speaker, Mr. Abdirahman Dinari said today the town that hosts the government’s temporary headquarters is safe and stable while responding to rumors of instability in the region. He denied some news reports which said armed thugs roam the city freely and the presidential limousine has been hijacked and taken to lawless Mogadishu.

The speaker counterattacked some Mogadishu radio stations and websites who reported instability in Jowhar, calling them irresponsible, liars, and warmongers.

“Thanks to Middle Sabelle (province) authorities, Jowhar is much saver than many countries in North America and Europe. These media outlets are showing the public how untrustworthy and irresponsible they are.” He said.

Southern Somalia has been in ruins for more than a decade and the Interim government relocated in Jowhar, 90 Km northeast of Mogadishu after it was inaugurated in nearby Nairobi, Kenya. African Union promised to send peace keeping force to Somalia initially but that promise never materialized.

Much of Middle Shabelle province is controlled by militia loyal to pro-interim government colonel Mohamed Omar Habeb, known as Mohamed Dhere. And it has been stable throughout the civil war.
