SOMALIA: PM ALI AND HIS CABINET WILL HEAD MOGADISHU SOON September 17, 2005

<|somalipm.jpg|PM Ali Gedi|left|>Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi of Somalia whose government is currently located in Jowhar, about 90 KM northeast of Mogadishu temporarily announced his desire to move to Mogadishu, saying the next ministerial cabinet will take place in the capital. Mogadishu hosts powerful militias who are now joining forces to combat Mr. Ali’s government. Many politicians see this decision to join Mogadishu fray as recipe for disaster. He made it clear that his cabinet’s next meeting in the capital will not change the government’s agenda and its policy toward renegade sworn government officials.

A similar infant government failed in 2000 when its head, Abdiqasim Salad Hassan defied his colleagues and moved from neighboring Djbouti where it was established to Moagadishu instead of widely agreed Baydabo city. Like Mr. Gedi, Abdiqasim had a wide tribal base in Mogadishu.

Militia leaders from Mogadishu and other cities as far as Kismayo and Baydabo are holding a meeting against the interim government in Mogadishu. Initial reports this meeting say the leaders are trying to come up with a way to combat the new government jointly without disturbing the delicate power balance among their tribes.

The prime minister and senior government officials repeatedly said most of the government members will move to Mogadishu in the near future. The son of Mohamed Farah Aidid who’s a member of Ali’s cabinet is now in Mogadishu and said the prime minister will move to the presidential palace. Husein Aidid’s militia controls the palace. The president and his cabinet along with other governmental offices d his will remain in Jowhar for foreseeable future.
