PREMIER LEAGUE: ANDY COLE SIGNS ONE-YEAR SUNDERLAND DEAL August 27, 2007

(SomaliNet) Andy Cole has signed for Sunderland on a one-year deal. The 35-year-old links up with former Manchester United team-mates Roy Keane and Dwight Yorke.

He successfully came through a medical at the Stadium of Light and will take the squad number 20. He may take his place in the squad for Saturday's home clash with Liverpool.

The 35-year-old left Portsmouth this summer after Harry Redknapp agreed to cancel the final two years of his contract.

He is second on the all-time Premier League goalscorers list behind Alan Shearer, and was a key member of the hugely successful United side of the late 1990s.

He has also played for Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City, Manchester City and Fulham among others.

"His experience will be vital for us," said Sunderland manager Keane. "I spoke last week about the fact that we don't have too much experience in the dressing room and there's no harm in bringing one or two lads who have done the course and know what it is all about."

However, Sunderland face up to six weeks without their skipper Dean Whitehead, who has suffered knee ligament damage.

"Deano's not good, he will be out for at least four or five weeks, possibly longer," said Keane.

"He is a massive loss to us, we missed him last weekend. He's been a top player since I've come to the club - a good leader and an excellent captain."-Eurosport
