CHAMPIONS: CHELSEA’S KEEPER NAMED UEFA’S CLUB GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR August 31, 2007

(SomaliNet) Chelsea's Petr Cech has been named UEFA's Club Goalkeeper of the Year, with Kaka of AC Milan landing the Club Footballer of the Year gong.

The Blue’s Czech shot-stopper Cech received his award at Thursday's draw for the UEFA Champions League group stages after seeing off competition from the likes of Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

Cech's award marks a considerable return to fortune after he recovered from a career threatening head injury earlier in the season to help Chelsea reach the semi-finals of the competition.

Milan trio Paolo Maldini, Clarence Seedorf and Kaka collected the Defender, Midfielder and Forward accolades after helping the Italian outfit lift the trophy in Athens.

And Kaka walked away with the main prize too, succeeding Barcelona's Ronaldinho who was named best in Europe in 2006.

Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba and Wayne Rooney all received nominations for their respective categories. –Eursosport
