HAITI: DEATH TOLL FROM COLLAPSED SCHOOL BUILDING HITS OVER 90 November 10, 2008

(SomaliNet) The number of pupils and teachers killed when a three-storey school collapsed in a suburb of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince on Friday has now risen to over 90.

At least 150 have been injured. However, it is unclear how many adults and children still remain buried under the rubble.

Although at least 700 pupils were registered at the kindergarten and the primary and secondary schools in the building, it is not known how many were inside when it collapsed.

The Haitian President René Préval has said the school was constructed with practically no reinforced steel or cement.

The owner and headmaster, Protestant minister Fortin Augustin, claims he built the school all by himself. He has since been arrested.-RNW
