PHILIPPINES: BRITISH EMBASSY ISSUES TERRORIST WARNING December 7, 2006

(SomaliNet) The British Embassy in the Philippines warned Thursday against possible terror attacks in the central province of Cebu, where the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit will be held later in the week. The embassy urged all its citizens to postpone their travel to Cebu province, 585 kilometers south of Manila, where massive anti-government demonstrations were also expected to be held.
"The high threats from terrorism remains throughout the Philippines," said a report that was released. "We continue to receive reports that terrorist groups are planning further attacks and believe that they have the capacity and intent to carry out attacks at anytime and anywhere in the country."
On Wednesday, retired general Leo Alvez, chief of security for the five-day event starting on December 10, said his office has not monitored any specific threats to the summit. Alvez added that the Philippines is focusing its attention on the demonstrations planned by anti-government groups for the duration of the summit.
ASEAN groups Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar (Burma). Its leaders would be joined by counterparts from Japan, China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand in the Cebu meetings.
