According to a radio report by the UN, atleast 92 per cent of girls and women in Egypt have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM), despite the fact that the procedure was criminalized in the country in 2008.

FGM, as it is often referred to, is frequently rooted in cultural and religious beliefs, but has no medical benefit. According to the UN Radio, the United the Nations Development Programme(UNDP) has been working with the Egyptian authorities to reduce the practice.

Cathrine Hasselberg talked with Anita Nirody, UNDP Resident Representative in Egypt and began by asking what FGM is.
